This About Trek Hire UK page lets you know that we are the ORIGINAL HIRE COMPANY (Est 2002) and how we have been successfully supplying groups and individuals with good quality trekking equipment for the past 13 years.

Trek Hire UK Ltd was built on the back of a charity trek that set off from these shores at the beginning of the Millennium to conquer Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Barry Gill (founder) instigated the trek and enrolled the services of 10 of his friends to set about raising funds for his local charity. They had to buy all of the essential equipment which included four season sleeping bags, Therm-a-rest Mats, Rucksacks, Duffle bags and Walking Poles to name just a few items, which as you can imagine, cost a pretty penny as there was no hire solution available at that time.

After months of preparation and planning the group finally set off on what turned out to be the adventure of a lifetime.

On their return, most of the group decided that, although demanding and enjoyable in equal measure they wouldn’t take it up as a ‘hobby’ and they were therefore left with a dilemma as to what to do with the equipment that they had bought

Solution:  Due mainly to the fact that at that time eBay didn’t exist, Barry decided to buy everyone’s equipment, put together a simple web site, to see if he could hire it out to other people who were embarking on their own adventure and who in turn also wanted to keep the costs to a minimum.

In the 13 years since, we have now put together a very comprehensive list of equipment that will enable trekkers to not only keep the costs down but let them enjoy their respective treks in the knowledge that everything they hire from us is exactly what they need to succeed!

Our History

2002  –  Setup Trek Hire UK with a minimum but operational number of sleeping bags, therm-a-rest mats, down jackets etc. These were all tried and tested products on the back of trek that went Kilimanjaro.

2004 –  Moved to a new base in Edenbridge, Kent where we continued to evolve the company by purchasing new and updated items of equipment

2005 –  Preparations were being made to move into a larger premises in Dorking where we could continue our evolution by providing one day treks and advice seminars which led on to discounts for those who attended

2007  –  Established ourselves in Dorking. The trek training days were going well and a further increase in stock levels allowed us to offer more updated gear and equipment to those heading off on higher altitude treks

2009  –  Changed location again, this time to the beautiful village of Shere which gave us the opportunity to open our first retail shop allowing us to sell the items that would compliment our hire gear perfectly, essentially creating a ‘one stop shop’.

2010  –  Further developments in the outdoor industry encouraged us to start looking at bespoke treks to Morocco for our customers. These treks would help people in preparation for higher climbs such as Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp!

2012  –  Our shop is now well established, we are now recognised as a boot fitting specialist and our range of organised treks has now expanded to Peru and Russia as well as our usual vists to the beautiful Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

The main brands we sell are Montane, Mammut and Rab including very good footwear from Meindl, AKU, Mammut.

We also provide trek training days in the Surrey Hills from our shop, weekends in Snowdon and a winter skills program in Scotland which would help people prepare for more technical trips to the Himalayas…
